In all sectors of the economy, businesses saw a record number of employees resigning from their jobs. Some left to go back home because they grew accustomed to working from home. Some left for a better paying job, and some left for no other reason than they were exhausted and wanted something different in their life.</span></span></p><div data-hook="rcv-block2" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #4d4d4d; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;" type="empty-line"></div><p class="mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr" id="viewer-7t165" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #4d4d4d; direction: ltr; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.5; margin: 0px; min-height: var(--ricos-custom-p-min-height,unset); outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span class="_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; direction: ltr; display: block; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: arial;">So how did this affect the education profession. Advocacy and Protection</span> - A big reason why people leave or stay is because of the leader specifically. If a staff member knows that the leader has their back and will protect them from attacks, they have a stronger likelihood of staying. If they don't feel safety and security, they will look for another place where they will find that protection.</span></p></li><li class="_1atvN _2ULPL public-DraftStyleDefault-orderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN" id="viewer-92jkh" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; direction: ltr; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.5; list-style-type: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 3em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-align: left !important; vertical-align: baseline;"><p class="_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: var(--ricos-custom-p-color,unset); direction: ltr; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: var(--ricos-custom-p-font-style,unset); font-variant: inherit; font-weight: var(--ricos-custom-p-font-weight,unset); line-height: 1.5; margin: 0px 0px 8px; min-height: var(--ricos-custom-p-min-height,unset); outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: var(--ricos-custom-p-text-decoration,unset); vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">3. Professional Learning </span> - Professional learning has taken a back seat due to the pandemic and I truly believe that it is the reason people leave. If we don’t eat, we will die of starvation, and professional learning is the food people need to survive and then thrive. If we want to retain our teachers, we must make plans to provide short, ongoing, and (MOST IMPORTANTLY) meaningful professional learning all teachers and leaders. </span></p></li><li class="_1atvN _2ULPL public-DraftStyleDefault-orderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-list-ltr fixed-tab-size _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN" id="viewer-abkpb" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; direction: ltr; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.5; list-style-type: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 3em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; text-align: left !important; vertical-align: baseline;"><p class="_1j-51 _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: var(--ricos-custom-p-color,unset); direction: ltr; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: var(--ricos-custom-p-font-style,unset); font-variant: inherit; font-weight: var(--ricos-custom-p-font-weight,unset); line-height: 1.5; margin: 0px 0px 8px; min-height: var(--ricos-custom-p-min-height,unset); outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: var(--ricos-custom-p-text-decoration,unset); vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">4. Sadly that also means we will need go get up one hour earlier. While I don’t like getting up one hour earlier, I love the benefits of having extra daylight in the evening. Springing forward gives me a brand new perspective on my day and its new opportunities. More time is always a good thing.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With this ‘extra’ hour, we can get out more. We can attend more events. Ultimately, we experience more of what’s outside our office or buildings because the new season and the new time change entices us to seek the beauty of spring. With all of the personal benefits of the time change, it is important to explore how springing forward can impact our leadership?</div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">4 Ways to Spring Forward in your Leadership</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlCDskzkY8CtUxq1SN883qQ7Vm0wuBCMgOz6AL1DH8H7az1grT3A9lMTtxrGX9PPQLuDYpo4lOLHPKk02UQXMYl7JvgUaCKrn1EYtZmfBbW4Nu_KWUOs_PXKFCt7sdGrEu_kHUBcqXeS4/s1600/068413A3-5D0D-4BB6-A738-927C075013E7.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1344" data-original-width="807" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlCDskzkY8CtUxq1SN883qQ7Vm0wuBCMgOz6AL1DH8H7az1grT3A9lMTtxrGX9PPQLuDYpo4lOLHPKk02UQXMYl7JvgUaCKrn1EYtZmfBbW4Nu_KWUOs_PXKFCt7sdGrEu_kHUBcqXeS4/s400/068413A3-5D0D-4BB6-A738-927C075013E7.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b>With the time change, there are 4 ways to leverage spring to get even more out of our leadership. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b>1. Visibility</b></span> - Getting out more offers leaders more opportunities to connect with more stakeholders. Use the spring to get out of the office and gather information of where the organization thrives and where it needs improvement. </div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: medium;"><b>2. Spring Cleaning</b></span> - Now is the perfect time to identify ineffective actions, initiatives, and resources that need to be removed from the organization. Remove the clutter or waste from your daily routine, and springing forward will be a breeze. </div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: medium;">3. Planning</span></b> - Summer is right around the corner, and that means preparing the school to excel to even higher levels next year. Summer work can’t truly excel without spring planning. Spend time each day mapping out the next steps for organizational and personal growth. </div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: medium;">4. Feedback</span></b> - Since spring serves as a springboard for next school year, leaders can make time to elicit feedback from students, parents and staff on the effectiveness of their leadership, communication, and support of the school. Feedback is the fertilizer for new growth. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">How will You Spring Forward?</span></div>
<div>
Where does your leadership need to grow? Where does it need to be pruned both in personal work and organizational inefficiency? The answers to those questions lie in the leader’s ability to honestly reflect, but the results of the time change are ultimately determined by the leader’s courage to both embrace the new time and to take advantage of opportunities given this spring. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy Time Change. </div>

At the end of the day, what makes a champion is work, but not just the ordinary work that everyone else does. It takes the right work to become a champion.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you think of transforming a school into the premier school in the same way you think of making a football team a state or national champion, you quickly come to realize that excellent schools do a few things really well. To be more specific, becoming a champion boils down to running a few plays extremely well, and those plays are executed with precision in order to reach the mountaintop. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span>5 Plays of a Championship School </span></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzatXE-QvAzNuixgFp8a7IpQR6WdxFB-H_C8vGGMhWiGYT5SpwFKObh0gAxBo51rZ0ztZKlhipfLT1DNmvqt9-bXUExrQFQwsXWl1oYPrOBZym9rYIx2BWBDnHHjrRk_JmnieKj_Y_0hk/s1600/FE35EE58-8481-4674-AC71-10A22D22BFDE.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="1131" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzatXE-QvAzNuixgFp8a7IpQR6WdxFB-H_C8vGGMhWiGYT5SpwFKObh0gAxBo51rZ0ztZKlhipfLT1DNmvqt9-bXUExrQFQwsXWl1oYPrOBZym9rYIx2BWBDnHHjrRk_JmnieKj_Y_0hk/s320/FE35EE58-8481-4674-AC71-10A22D22BFDE.jpeg" width="318" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">1. Consistency</span>- Championship schools understand that consistency is the key to their success. From the front door of the school to the classroom and everywhere in between, the adults in the building strive to be consistent with one another because they know that consistency sets the foundation for every student to become a champion. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">2. Set the Bar</span> - Championship schools identify the bar that every student must reach to become a champion. Within each subject educators identify the skills that every student must master in order to master the subject, and they challenge every student to believe in their ability to reach them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">3. Measure the Bar</span> - Once the bar has been set, educators define how they will assess all students in order to determine which kids are making progress or even becoming proficient in reaching the bar. More importantly they inspire kids to own their data and believe in the hard work it takes to reach the bar. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">4. Plan to Reach the Bar</span> - Building assessments is great but championship schools and the educators within them make specific plans to help every student master the assessments. Those plans result in fun instruction, powerful lessons, targeted interventions, and specific strategies that all students will specifically designed to prepare all kids to master the assessment. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">5. Professional Learning</span> - Champions never stop learning, and they never stop reflecting. They know that championships only come when they invest in their own growth and development in their craft. The best educators are no different. They know that their success and their students’ success is greatly impacted by the depth of their own learning. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span>What Plays Would You Add?</span></div>
<div>
So what other plays would you add? What else does it take to become a championship school? What other actions do schools take to reach the pinnacle of excellence? Always remember. Your school’s championship is within your reach. The question is will you have the courage to inspire your school to run the plays to reach it?</div>

One landed just half an inch to the west of the peak and the other landed just half an inch to the east of the same peak. That inch of separation made all the difference in the final destination of those 2 drops.<br />
<br />
The drop that landed to the west followed its path winding through creeks, mountains, rivers, and valleys and eventually wound up in the Pacific Ocean, while the drop to the east journeyed to the Mississippi River and found its way to the Gulf of Mexico and eventually the Atlantic Ocean. One inch changed the trajectories of the 2 drops forever.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The Continental Decide</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWvuPSVjgpDHLO-bSD3rGVKzTQMCnBlVOvSgw7cEn7TJDBIV11ILMiO0fX4X9JSQF6mOMfw_a0XapKrEtg5UZXrvW9QE2HMIJ2qWw6ZgFBY8i1KZnSb4mix2x3JUCgFM89X2HiySXKGA0/s1600/Screen+Shot+2020-01-27+at+6.46.59+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="616" height="258" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWvuPSVjgpDHLO-bSD3rGVKzTQMCnBlVOvSgw7cEn7TJDBIV11ILMiO0fX4X9JSQF6mOMfw_a0XapKrEtg5UZXrvW9QE2HMIJ2qWw6ZgFBY8i1KZnSb4mix2x3JUCgFM89X2HiySXKGA0/s400/Screen+Shot+2020-01-27+at+6.46.59+AM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
This powerful story is no different for us, and this is how it applies to us. We have a decision to make and this decision is so powerful that it could quickly take us to the land of pacification or it could take us to unbelievable places. The decision is whether or not we want to commit our lives to discovering our unique excellence and why we were placed on this earth or if we want to simply accept mediocrity as our lot in life. <br />
<br />
The choice of mediocrity will not require a lot of work, and it may make us content and possibly happy, but the downside is that the path of mediocrity will never lead us to discovering our true gifts and abilities that were given specifically to us. The choice of excellence will make us open to new ideas, challenging ourselves to constantly become better, but it will also be relentlessly hard work that will exceed the normal hours others will want to work. Both paths will have upsides, but they will also have their downside. <br />
<br />
It took the 2 drops roughly the same amount of time to reach their destination. We also have the same amount of time allotted to us to live our lives. We can choose to discover our inner best or not. The interesting thing about the Continental Decide is that neither decision is bad, but the choice we make will take us to 2 totally different places while we are on this earth. I'll choose excellence. How about you?<br />
<br />
<br />John winkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11024907737609756444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154520607412791034.post-79608798019071003312020-01-11T10:28:00.000-06:002020-01-11T10:28:23.211-06:00WHY Your Day should Start with Your WHYThis past week, our district had the opportunity to have <a href="http://www.twitter.com/unfoldthesoul" target="_blank">Ken Williams</a> speak to our district staff. (By the way, if you haven’t heard him, you’re missing out. <a href="https://twitter.com/unfoldthesoul/status/1206647527400980481?s=21" target="_blank">Click here</a> for an example of what I’m talking about.). His message reminded me of the real reason we do what we do, to create men and women who are not only successful employees, but ultimately influential leaders, mothers, and fathers of future generations.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Think about that for just a second. How much more powerful would our work and daily efforts be if we constantly reminded ourselves that our work was designed to build future leaders? How much more committed would we be to our work if we knew our work was building mothers and fathers? Chances are that we would be more connected to our work with that compelling why as opposed to a work-based why like improving test scores. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Your Why Influences your What</b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDofYa55ykKACl375kc_DNcMQaH7G2_U6LN3Ll4XtNOpwpkR_rY473eelYUBbZ5n7MXjxLPD06I5t4PZeVn1IaWbpbKTQEU-oykOpzscofxeKRyGfJfG4zLuDqzcN7_s6cEcJv_98eebs/s1600/507069F1-2672-4413-B3CF-36F98B793C15.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1142" data-original-width="1069" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDofYa55ykKACl375kc_DNcMQaH7G2_U6LN3Ll4XtNOpwpkR_rY473eelYUBbZ5n7MXjxLPD06I5t4PZeVn1IaWbpbKTQEU-oykOpzscofxeKRyGfJfG4zLuDqzcN7_s6cEcJv_98eebs/s320/507069F1-2672-4413-B3CF-36F98B793C15.jpeg" width="299" /></a></b></span></div>
</div>
<div>
If your why is compelling, your what will follow suit. If the reason you exist is to simply get the job done, your work will be driven by numbers and tasks, but if your purpose on earth is to build men and women of the future, not only will you instill values into your students and those you work with, but your numbers (test scores or whatever bottom line you need) will grow even more. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Ways to Stay Focused on your Why</b></span></div>
<div>
Your day is not impacted by your Why unless you wake up to your Why. Some great strategies to start with your why include: </div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Posting your Why in a prominent place that you can see when you wake up, </li>
<li>Post your why in your car on your way to work, or on your desk or board in your room when your arrive at work,</li>
<li>Tell others what your why is. When you profess it, it’s power grows. </li>
<li>Set an alarm on your phone that reminds you to focus on your why. </li>
<li>Have a morning routine where reviewing your why is one of the things you do. </li>
</ul>
<div>
Our work (WHAT we do) often fails to reach its potential because we are influenced by emotions of the day or even hour, unexpected issues and even setbacks. When these things come up, our why can lose focus and ultimately it’s effectiveness in making a difference, but when we start our day with the WHY, those unexpected obstacles stand much less of a chance of negatively impacting our work because our why drives our perspective. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Simon Sinek said real change starts with the WHY. If we take that simple yet powerful concept to the next level, we could conclude that real change occurs only if we commit to change for the better everyday; therefore, we would start everyday with our why and keep our focus on that why throughout everyday. And when we start each day’s work with the why, what we do will yield results and relationships beyond our wildest needs. </div>

When it comes to New Years and even new decades it’s easy to just think, “This year is going to be my year!” But it’s not that simple. This year will be your year if and only if you do the work to make intentional plans to make it your year!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">10 Tips to Make Sure 2020 is Your Year!</span></div>

living. </div>
<div>
<b>2. Set a Relationship Goal</b> - Make plans to spend quality time with those who mean the most to you! They are your support system and who you will spend the most time with in 2020. </div>
<div>
<b>3. Set a Professional Goal</b> - Set a goal for your career that you want to accomplish this year?</div>
<div>
<b>4. Make a Weekly Schedule</b> - If you want to accomplish these goals, you have to make time for them in your schedule every day. Putting it on a calendar gives you a greater chance of accomplishing those goals. </div>
<div>
<b>5. Sunday Reflection</b> - Make time every Sunday to review your goals, make your schedule support your goals, and evaluate your progress. </div>
<div>
<b>6. Wake Up Routine</b> - Develop a 5-15 minute morning routine that gets you focused for the day. It may be spending time reading or in prayer. This prepares your mind to reach your goals each day. </div>
<div>
<b>7. Turn Off Notifications</b> - Our cell phones are our biggest distraction. Turning off all notifications except for text and phone calls keeps our phone from hurting our plans and productivity. </div>
<div>
<b>8. Set Timers </b>- Using your phone or watch timers and alarms helps you optimize your time so that you don’t waste time on tasks or excessively long meetings. </div>
<div>
<b>9. Make Appointments with Yourself </b>- If our work, health and time with family is important, use your calendar to save blocks of time so that you guarantee that your time is spent well. </div>
<div>
<b>10. Have Fun</b> - Life is too short not to enjoy it. Realize that 2020 can’t be a good year unless you’re having a good time in your new year.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The new year is an opportunity for a new you! It can be the best year of your life if and only if you make the most of it. I challenge you to optimize your time. Make the most of your relationships, and remember that you and only you are the only reason your 2020 will not be a So-So year. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy New Year!</div>

I have enjoyed leading amazing schools, and I have enjoyed sharing my thoughts with you for almost all of this decade. As I reflect, it is hard to believe that I have been sharing my thoughts with you through this blog since 2012. There have been ups, downs, celebrations, and failures throughout this decade and with each event, it prompted a thought that I shared with you.<br />
<br />
It is because of you that I wrote the book, "<a href="https://www.solutiontree.com/authors/john-wink/leaders-guide-excellence-every-classroom.html" target="_blank">A Leader's Guide to Excellence in Every Classroom</a>", in 2016 and followed that up with my latest book, "<a href="https://www.solutiontree.com/authors/john-wink/teachers-guide-to-excellence-in-every-classroom.html" target="_blank">A Teacher's Guide to Excellence in Every Classroom</a>". You inspired me to create a movement, <a href="http://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/p/lovemyschoolday.html" target="_blank">#LoveMySchoolDay</a>, where every year on a school day around April 11 (4/11), educators across North America give their communities the 411 about all the reasons they love their school.<br />
<br />
So it is with great excitement that I share with you the LeadLearner Top 10 of the 2010 Decade<br />

The 2010's were a fantastic decade. Thanks to you, I grew by leaps and bounds. I appreciate you for reading my thoughts and giving me feedback through your comments and shares. I wish you the best in 2020! Happy New Year!John winkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11024907737609756444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154520607412791034.post-46012428731651608252019-12-08T22:10:00.001-06:002019-12-08T22:10:15.569-06:00The 2 Minute Warning for LearningIn football the 2 minute warning is an intense push from the team to score before going into half-time or the end of the game. When it comes to halftime, success during the 2 minute warning gives the team a huge momentum boost heading into the locker-room. If you think about it, the 2 minute warning can change the trajectory of the rest of the game.<br />
<br />
No matter if your team is ahead or behind, you expect them to give everything they've got leading up to half-time. In fact, you would be pretty frustrated if your team shut it down and let the clock take them into the lockerroom. The last 2 minutes of the 1st half sets the stage for the 2nd half.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Now Let's Apply this Analogy to your School</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivh1H3LXjxReE4h90LvUSc3SqV-hVcnb1ZiI7kY4eNlKBZoLMQQBrw6vHEgThAqI7cXhoReNSbo9BGVJDelsC5PIEBDr1fYRDpI-V_cu12RMSeA9QXEVv_ulFgdLxwfWCzzSMmn6jiB64/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-12-08+at+10.04.02+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="306" data-original-width="502" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivh1H3LXjxReE4h90LvUSc3SqV-hVcnb1ZiI7kY4eNlKBZoLMQQBrw6vHEgThAqI7cXhoReNSbo9BGVJDelsC5PIEBDr1fYRDpI-V_cu12RMSeA9QXEVv_ulFgdLxwfWCzzSMmn6jiB64/s320/Screen+Shot+2019-12-08+at+10.04.02+PM.png" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<div>
In schools, the 2 weeks before Christmas break is very similar to a 2 minute warning. If done well, the last 2 weeks can send the kids home for break fired up about the spring semester. But if we shut down our engines early, it can hurt the impact we make on kids during the second semester. The weeks leading up to break have the potential to strengthen the momentum needed to reach our goals for the spring semester.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To finish strong in the 2 minute warning, we must keep our intensity. We must make the extra effort to build upon our relationships with all kids. Most importantly, we must avoid the temptation to go into the locker room before the clock expires. <br />
<br />
Students deserve to go into their break believing in how much growth they have experienced in the first semester, and they need to leave with confidence that they will achieve their growth goals in the spring semester. Momentum is motivation, and we control how much motivation students will have going into break.<br />
<br />
So how will you manage the clock during your 2 minute warning? The answer to that question will result in your plan that will set the stage for success or failure during the spring semester.</div>

<b><i>All great leaders are teaching, and all great teachers are leading.</i> </b></div>

Whenever I talk with an educator I’ve just met, I always ask this question, "What do you do?", and invariably I get the usually responses. "I'm a principal." "I'm a teacher", or "I'm a director". You get the point; they answer with the name of their position.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
<span style="font-size: large;">But that's doesn't answer my question. </span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
Your title doesn't tell me what you do. It tells me the role you play. The point for asking this question is to see how teachers view the potential in their role. Whenever I hear someone say <b>"I'm just a teacher", </b>or respond like their role isn't very important, I whence just a bit. The <b><i>"Just a Teacher"</i></b> response tells me that something or someone in the teacher's culture or in that person's experience has obscured the person's vision for optimizing the value of their role as something bigger than merely being responsible for teaching kids.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
Let's be real for just a minute. Teachers are much more than "<b>Just a Teacher</b>". In fact the reason that education is becoming more successful every year is because teachers AREN'T just teachers. They are changing the landscape of education one day at a time and one student at a time, and as leaders we owe it to teachers to combat the mindset of minuteness by convincing teachers that they have a much greater impact and play a vastly bigger role than they could possibly imagine. </div>

Here are a few phrases that leaders could use with teachers through daily interactions that could compel them to give up the mentality of "<b><i>Just a Teacher"</i></b>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">

<ul style="color: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px; line-height: 1.4; margin: 0px -15px; padding: 0px 2.5em;">
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">You have expertise that I don't have.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">You possess knowledge that others need.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">You see things in kids that we can't possibly see.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">You influence your peers in ways that I can't. </li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">You have the potential to lead in ways that others can't.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">You add tremendous value to our organization.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">We need you to NOT be just a teacher</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">We need your help in leading our school.</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0.25em 0px;">You ARE a vital piece of the puzzle.</li>
</ul>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(68, 68, 68); color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
What if every leader took a few minutes every day to have these kinds of conversations with one or two teachers per day? What kind of school could we create? What kind of potential would we discover? What level of talent would we unleash? What kind of leadership capacity would we build? Can you see what would happen. </div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(68, 68, 68); color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="caret-color: rgb(68, 68, 68); color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 15.84000015258789px;">
The ability to lead our schools to the top begins with unleashing the leadership potential in every teacher. Every teacher has a superpower, and the best leaders remove the mindset of “Just a Teacher” by building the confidence and competence in every teacher. And when this mindset is transformed, it permeates throughout the entire school by fostering a mindset of continuous growth that is fueled and nurtured through both shared leadership and perpetual learning.<br />

It is a time to reflect on goals that we are committed to reaching and reaffirm our commitment to not let anything get in our path so we can accomplish our goal. </span><br />
<span style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody;">Why do we have #NoExcuseNovember? Excuses are the enemy of excellence. They lower our expectations, and therefore, detract our determination and commitment. So how do we ensure that our commitment to excellence does not fall to the almighty excuse during the month of November?</span><br />
<span style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0VljMaDRFcLT8IpgnXKmj5nARV8RC7DVA7_s2uSKnjHYujeETfmJjDKgeK9IqYYasHEHfvMxBQHrCu8-LlT7MXiS7ZBbRROmQUlMtNxiNSJTuD0uj3z8KTlXdY_OjJDqkpFFMx4bunWw/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-10-30+at+7.35.46+AM.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0VljMaDRFcLT8IpgnXKmj5nARV8RC7DVA7_s2uSKnjHYujeETfmJjDKgeK9IqYYasHEHfvMxBQHrCu8-LlT7MXiS7ZBbRROmQUlMtNxiNSJTuD0uj3z8KTlXdY_OjJDqkpFFMx4bunWw/s400/Screen+Shot+2019-10-30+at+7.35.46+AM.png" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Love Tough</span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody;">
We have been taught that our children need tough love if we want them to grow into their potential. We don't accept excuses, and that definitely falls in line with #NoExcuseNovember. But in Jon Gordon‘s book, “<b>The Power of Positive Leadership</b>“, he challenged us to reframe the concept of Tough Love into a more powerful concept, <b>Love Tough</b>. When it comes to <b>Tough Love</b>, our primary focus is to be tough while our secondary consideration is to care about the individual, but if we <b>Love Tough</b>, we are the exact opposite. We care about our people first and foremost, and because we care about them so much, we hold them to a higher standard with our care, support, and attention.<br />
<br />
As we kick off <a href="https://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/2016/11/lets-teach-kids-tenacity-in.html" target="_blank">#NoExcuseNovember (post about kids)</a>, it is important that we commit to not accept any excuses that hold us back (by the way most of them do), but we make that commitment by understanding more about excuses, where they come from, and what they actually mean to the person making them. We must be thankful that the person felt comfortable enough with us in the first place to make their excuse, and then we must leverage our relationship with the person in such a way that lets them know the following things:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>We, first, care about them, </li>
<li>We care about them enough to not allow their excuse to be the reason they fail, and</li>
<li>We are committed to helping them overcome the barrier to their success.</li>
</ol>
<div>
November is here. Excuses are everywhere, and all of them exist to hold our organization and the people within it back. What will you do this month to love your people through their excuses, and push them to new heights? You hold the key to success in #NoExcuseNovember. The question is will you have the courage to unlock the door?</div>

Abraham Lincoln said it best when he said, "Folks <span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be."</span> If that's the case, then why are some leaders always happy while others seem to never be. The secret may lie not in their ability to choose happiness, but in the mindset they have before they even have to make a choice. There are 5 powerful characteristics that the happiest leaders possess.</div>
<div class="p1" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px 0px 3px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px 0px 3px;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>5 Facts about the Happiest Leaders </b></span></div>
<div class="p1" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px 0px 3px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">H</span>umility</b> - Leaders who are the happiest are the most humble and never put themselves above others.</span></div>
<div class="p2" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">
<span class="s2" style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">A</span>ttention</b> - The happiest leaders pay the bulk of their attention to others, while the most unhappy want all of the attention to be on themselves. </span></div>
<div class="p2" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">
<span class="s2" style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">P</span>ride</b> - Happy people take pride in promoting everyone and everything in the organization, while unhappy leaders are prideful in their actions and interactions. </span></div>
<div class="p2" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">
<span class="s2" style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">P</span>atience</b> - Happy leaders know when to wait, while unhappy leaders are frustrated anytime they have to wait. </span></div>
<div class="p2" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">
<span class="s2" style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="font-size: x-large;">Y</span>et</b> - Happy leaders know they’re a work in progress and believe in the power of growing closer to what they can’t do yet. <span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Unhappy leaders are perpetually disappointed because they’re never satisfied with their current status and why they’re not there yet. </span></div>
<div class="p2" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">
<span class="s2" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="p3" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 27.4px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="s2"></span><br /></span></div>
<div class="p2" style="color: #454545; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">
<span class="s2" style="font-family: inherit;">The difference between unhappy and happy leaders is their self-perspective. Happy leaders seek out, while unhappy leaders base their outlook on their own feelings, priorities, and needs. When it comes right down to it, if you seek what's best for yourself first, you will be unhappy some if not most of the time because the world doesn't exist to serve you. But if you choose to be happy, you will rarely put yourself first, and focus on putting others first. </span><br />
<span class="s2" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span class="s2" style="font-family: inherit;">Choose to be a happy leader. Your attitude and those impacted by your attitude will thank you for it. </span></div>

This past week my blog reached its one millionth view. I can’t even begin to describe the feelings that I have. There was some excitement, a sense of satisfaction, and a whole lot of humility. I can’t thank you enough for taking an interest in my thoughts over the past 7 years.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I vividly remember the fear that I had the first time I pressed publish on <a href="https://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/2012/07/develop-leaders-in-everyone.html" target="_blank"><b>my first post</b></a>. Would it be interesting? Would it be even read? What people think I’m an idiot? Those thoughts raced through my mind as I completed and shared my first post. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then there was a moment when you convinced me that I was a writer. It was this post, <a href="https://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/2012/09/7-traits-of-transformational-leader.html" target="_blank"><b>7 Traits of a Transformational Leader</b></a>, where you convinced me that I possessed the ability to write appealing thoughts. To date, it is still one of the most read posts on my blog. Your response to that post caused me to reveal my confidence as a writer, and reveal my abilities as well as <a href="https://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/2012/07/ignorance-secret-leadership-weapon.html" target="_blank"><b>my ignorance</b></a>, and as a result, you pushed me to create a movement to inspire every to love their schools and the people in them with <a href="https://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/p/lovemyschoolday.html" target="_blank"><b>#LoveMySchoolDay</b></a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2SOd9SSAzvE7hPFoUvcTQjfe0aXTznRcdxvKquBlyfQpZJzsgTDwaAFdlGTXHaDJJu9lpAgVQjClCgZNuAlq4ZG1leVjmaFvLXxzcggi0SF2Wi5Pah-TS3jXypAcbzHy0tzDDtQKOikw/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-10-11+at+11.07.08+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="536" data-original-width="752" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2SOd9SSAzvE7hPFoUvcTQjfe0aXTznRcdxvKquBlyfQpZJzsgTDwaAFdlGTXHaDJJu9lpAgVQjClCgZNuAlq4ZG1leVjmaFvLXxzcggi0SF2Wi5Pah-TS3jXypAcbzHy0tzDDtQKOikw/s400/Screen+Shot+2019-10-11+at+11.07.08+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With your encouragement, you once again inspired me to grow as a writer. My first published work, "<a href="https://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/p/my-book.html" target="_blank"><b>A Leader’s Guide to Excellence in Every Classroom</b></a>", was something that I never dreamed I would do, let alone write a <a href="https://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/p/my-book.html" target="_blank"><b>follow up book</b></a> that was specifically designed to help teachers lead all students and all teachers to excellence. Each week you inspired me to share another thought rambling in my head. Sometimes it was the result of something I was very proud of, sometimes it was something very painful, and other times it was an epiphany from a powerful interaction who was influenced by more work.<br />
<br />
Nonetheless, I can't thank you enough. With every read, comment, and share, you developed me into the writer I am today, and for that I give a million thanks for you.</div>

In some cases students reach excellence, while in other cases they do not. How do we ensure that more students find excellence and fewer students fall through the cracks?</span><br />
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">
The answer is simple. It is a support system that guarantees all students succeed. So how do we develop a support system that ensures that all students learn, grow, and excel? </div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>The Student Excellence Support System</b></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">
In my new book, <a href="https://leadlearner2012.blogspot.com/p/my-book.html" target="_blank">“A Teacher’s Guide to Excellence in Every Classroom” (click here)</a>, I developed an Excellent Support System that teachers can use to support all students. This support system marries the collaborative concepts of a PLC at Work (professional learning community) with the responsive work in RTI (Response to intervention). This system is a three-step approach to supporting all kids. </div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMaFjCMmfiBNBSMC_c77u8MV_Hn5zYHJ2o7FRLbf8fPopXhllgb3yksC0iwaVz9OJUf4l4CTuq4_-6rN3wMkDZc4PgrhblNaH4f1gWdY-1J4X0Rir8ykbKi6UPbxP8_Qci8cFgKYj96AQ/s1600/C953A002-C9DF-413C-8A81-A3BD9C8042F0.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1311" data-original-width="872" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMaFjCMmfiBNBSMC_c77u8MV_Hn5zYHJ2o7FRLbf8fPopXhllgb3yksC0iwaVz9OJUf4l4CTuq4_-6rN3wMkDZc4PgrhblNaH4f1gWdY-1J4X0Rir8ykbKi6UPbxP8_Qci8cFgKYj96AQ/s400/C953A002-C9DF-413C-8A81-A3BD9C8042F0.jpeg" width="265" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><b><u><span style="font-size: large;">Teacher Team Supports</span></u></b> - Teacher teams collaborate about the supports necessary to help every child close their gaps by asking all teachers to develop the knowledge and skills to help every student succeed. </span></li>
<li><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><b><span style="font-size: large;"><u>Class-Wide Supports</u></span></b> - Teachers personalize the team supports to match both their teaching style and learning needs of their students. </span></li>
<li><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>Individual Student Supports</u></b></span> - Students will struggle in spite of teacher team and class-wide supports, and in these cases, Tier 1 interventions are specifically developed to meet the child’s greatest area of need.</span></li>
</ol>
<div>
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><br /></span>
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;"><br /></span>
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">How many steps are currently in place for all aspects of student support in your school? How many steps are left to be taken? If you focus on everything, you focus on nothing, and great teachers take the necessary step to close learning gaps for all kids by taking them one step at at time, one day at a time. Excellence in every child is within your reach, and when you and your teammates commit to taking 3 very important steps, a strong system of supports will be guarantee success for all kids in every classroom every day. </span></div>

As I reflect, I can’t help but think of all the initiatives I’ve experienced or been a part of, how many changes I have witnessed personally, and how many new things I’ve been asked to undertake. With all that I’ve experienced in my career, it could have been easy to use my age, experience, lack of knowledge, or my personal comfort as the reason why I couldn’t take part in a change initiative.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The benefit of age and experience is that they allow us have a plethora of knowledge that we can draw upon to grow as educators. The downside of age and experience is that they cause us to develop the “Old Dog Syndrome”. My abilities allow me to be strong in areas, but also play tricks on my mind that I’m not smart enough to make a change, this another symptom of “Old Dog Syndrome”. Finally, our “Old Dog Syndrome” is reinforced every day by our comfort levels. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
BUT LET ME BE CLEAR! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Young adults and even students can become affected by “Old Dog Syndrome”, it’s easy to spot symptoms of Old Dog Syndrome, which include but are not limited to the following statements:<br />
<div>
<ul>
<li>I can’t learn this. </li>
<li>I’m too old to learn this stuff,</li>
<li>I’m not tech savvy enough,</li>
<li>I’ve done it this way so long that I’ll never be able to change,</li>
<li>I’m not as good as (insert name or group of people to wrongly compare yourself),</li>
<li>This is too difficult,</li>
<li>I’ll never be able to (insert task). </li>

<br /></div>
<div>
To combat Old Dog Syndrome, we can take on the following actions. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Ask for help from others,</li>
<li>Tell leaders where the challenge is within the change,</li>
<li>Accept the fact that change is part of every facet in our world,</li>
<li>Make a daily commitment to learn one new thing each day,</li>
<li>Never use age as the barrier to growth. </li>
<li>Never accept difficulties as a reason to stop growing and learning. </li>
</ul>
“Old Dog Syndrome” does not apply to older people. It applies everyone of us when we believe that we can’t learn new things. It essentially petrifies the mind into its current state, thus new learning fails to take root. If we aim to end “Old Dog Syndrome”, we must recognize and reinforce that learning is not based on the age. It’s based on a deep desire for continuous improvement.<br />

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Leaders say a lot of things. Followers hear motivational messages, instructional ideas, strategic speeches, and at time directive diatribes. But the minute a leader’s statement is made, followers know if what is stated will bear fruit. The reason is not because of what is said or how it is said. The reason comes down to a simple proverb. </span></div>

Followers learn pretty quickly if their leader is a sayer or a sower. Leaders who are sayers make greet speeches, but followers know there’s no follow through, thus, nothing is sown, and therefore nothing is reaped. Their talk is always bigger than their walk. Their bark is much bigger than their bite, and followers know that the sayer has no plans to ensure that what he or she dreams will be supported with leadership through a purposeful plan of action. Other times, leaders plant their ideas in the ground, but fail to tend to their plans with actions of monitoring and accountability; therefore, their crop is strangled by weeds of neglect and lack of oversight. </span></div>

Sadly, winners will be lauded, and losers will labeled based on one simple letter derived from complex and difficult to explain formulas. Basically, this one little letter will be used to rate the entire body of work in a school, much of which has no bearing on the school's rating.<br />
<br />
That being said, some leaders will use the letter grade to promote how they will move up in performance to the next letter grade. C's will aspire for B's, and B's will strive for the all important A's. While aspiring for improvement is critically important, I would like to challenge you not to push anyone to chase any of the letters in A-F rating system. Instead I would like to push you to set your sights on a higher standard, the letter missing in the A-F system, E.<br />
<br />
If you want to set your sights on a rating that matters, then choose the letter, E. Here is what E can and should stand for when developing your plans to move to the next level.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><u>Earn the E Rating</u></b></span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQcH3gcr6AApvdCeJnCIGpMP_sw5cCsTltG2-oWqpHOV1DxwNNdRBML4uWLCPuHTm4dgkoz9wL6DePNWZkjyu0jyWjer6cNXg6asWzD5nyNuVuNowHK1kyanrDP2VLvnEhqyGeTizPQBE/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-07-30+at+11.03.19+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="652" data-original-width="428" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQcH3gcr6AApvdCeJnCIGpMP_sw5cCsTltG2-oWqpHOV1DxwNNdRBML4uWLCPuHTm4dgkoz9wL6DePNWZkjyu0jyWjer6cNXg6asWzD5nyNuVuNowHK1kyanrDP2VLvnEhqyGeTizPQBE/s400/Screen+Shot+2019-07-30+at+11.03.19+PM.png" width="262" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>Excellence</i></b></span> - We should aspire to be excellent in every thing from how we answer the phone to how we take the trash, to how we win games, and yes, how we create the very best learning environments in every classroom that guarantee learning for all kids.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>Effective</i></b></span> - School leaders should strive to create schools that are always finding exemplars of high effectiveness and replicate those effective processes and actions throughout the entire school. When we chase effectiveness, the letter in the rating system will come.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><i>Efficient</i></span></b> - We should identify practices that waste people's time and eliminate them. We must develop more efficient processes that accelerate productivity and push everyone in the organization to become lean and efficient with their work flow. Efficiency is the pathway to excellence.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>Everyday</i></b></span> - Bottom line is this. The best schools chase excellence every day, and they constantly find ways to be more effective and efficient, and they do that by eliminating anything that prevents the schools and its people from getting the best out of its students.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><u>E is a more Meaningful Goal.</u></b></span><br />
As you start the school year, I challenge you not to make a big deal out of your rating. Schools are so much more than a grade, and when we focus on evaluating ourselves based on the letter E, we become the schools we aspire to be for all kids and all staff. Finally, we become the kind of schools that our communities believe in and rally to support as we reach for the most important goal, excellence for all students and all adults.John winkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11024907737609756444noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-154520607412791034.post-26261900019064322922019-08-02T06:45:00.001-05:002019-08-02T06:45:43.474-05:00The #1 Thing You MUST Give Teachers BEFORE School Starts<div class="p1">
<span class="s1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Each year, leaders make their plans for school improvement, and this is typically how it goes. Set goals, determine action steps, find new resources and training everyone before school starts. Have additional meetings to ensure everyone knows everything to make this a great start to the year, and then give teachers time to work.</span><br />
<span class="s1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br /></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">While every bit of this is extremely important, all of the meetings and trainings can leave teachers with a whole lot of things to do and not a lot of time to do them all. If we want teachers to be highly successful with our initiatives, there is one thing they definitely want and we must give them at the beginning of the school year. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><span class="s1"></span><br /></span></div>

<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); text-align: center;">Yes, we need to take time to welcome back our people and </span><span style="text-align: center;">celebrate our </span><span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); text-align: center;">progress. We need to take time for team-building, but we also need to remember that with every piece of training, they need time to </span>process all of the new information we want them to know. While meetings and trainings are invaluable, so is time to collaborate with peers. Even more important is the time teachers need to take information back to their rooms so they can make a plan to apply that information. Time spent in training is wasted if we don’t give time for teachers to work both together and alone to process the information and make a plan to implement it.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, we can’t expect teachers to process multiple days of training of new and complex content. If we want them to be successful, it is best use of their time and our resources, if beginning of school year activities provide teachers deep learning about one or two things rather than multiple things. Additionally, if we believe whole group instruction is just one component of learning for kids, we must believe the same about adults and their learning. Teachers need the gradual release of responsibility in their learning also. They need staff development time dedicated to collaborative learning with their team and time for independent learning to take the learning gained from whole group and collaborative learning and determine how best to implement what they have learned. </div>

<span class="s1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">If we want teachers to be successful this year, we must give them TIME. We must structure professional learning time that values teachers more than it values content. At the end of the day when teachers consider the learning needs of their kids first, the content usually takes care of itself. The same is true schools considering the needs of their teachers first and the content we want them to learn second. At the start of this school year, value your teachers by valuing their learning time. </span></div>

All educators want their schools to be <b><i>really, </i></b><b><i>really </i></b>good, but wanting something to be good and taking the critical steps to make it happen are two totally different things. If you <b><i>really</i></b> want your school to be great, you have to <b><i>really</i></b> want to work hard to make your dreams become your reality.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><u>6 Steps to Becoming a Really Good School.</u></b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>R</b></span><span style="font-size: large;">elationships</span></div>
<div>
People make schools great when they focus on building strong relationships among and between leaders, teachers, students, and parents. When these relationships are strong, open, honest, supportive, and ultimately focused on what's best for all kids, schools stand a great chance of becoming great. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4ZCxhkDS8gYXazhCw1Ws4On-l_FnfsYvvlkNx8yzpWoSth-1IkiGxfErZuxd_k_XQUT2Eka-RbgwACfOlpJ96HkDlHN64ApwMICHASyoIp0gb0Lw_GGxLiwdiLnaHIr2iBR4JmxoDRjo/s1600/5B1451AE-61FD-474D-96A2-B295017DF1E4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1113" data-original-width="1085" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4ZCxhkDS8gYXazhCw1Ws4On-l_FnfsYvvlkNx8yzpWoSth-1IkiGxfErZuxd_k_XQUT2Eka-RbgwACfOlpJ96HkDlHN64ApwMICHASyoIp0gb0Lw_GGxLiwdiLnaHIr2iBR4JmxoDRjo/s320/5B1451AE-61FD-474D-96A2-B295017DF1E4.jpeg" width="311" /></a><span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>E</b></span><span style="font-size: large;">xpectations</span></div>
<div>
In schools of excellence, expectations are high, tight and consistent for all kids but also for all educators, and what's <b><i>really</i></b> important is that these high expectations remain high, tight, and consistent all year long. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>A</b></span><span style="font-size: large;">ccountability</span></div>
<div>
Expectations can only remain high when every person in the organization stays <b><i>really</i></b> committed to them by holding everyone accountable. Without accountability, high expectations wither away to mere hopes and dreams. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>L</b></span><span style="font-size: large;">eadership</span></div>
<div>
If you <b><i>really</i></b> want your school to be excellent, a culture of leadership exists where every employee from the principal to the custodian is a leader of some aspect of the school program, and they lead their area by inspiring and teaching everyone how to get better every day.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>L</b></span><span style="font-size: large;">earning</span></div>
<div>
Your school will never become <b><i>really</i></b> good until every adult becomes a learner and a model of learning for everyone around them. We can’t expect a students to become learners if the adults who influence them aren’t learners first. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Y</b></span><span style="font-size: large;">earning</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<b><i>Really</i></b> good schools never settle for the status quo, and they don’t lean on last year’s success. They yearn for even better <b><i>results</i></b>, a more supportive student environment, and a better and more effective way of doing things for the benefit of all students. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><u>Do You <b>Really</b> Want to be <b>Really</b> Good?</u></span></div>
<div>
The fact of the matter is that we all want the same thing, but the <b><i>really</i></b> good schools turn their aspirations into actualities. They turn their why’s into why nots, and they do it as a unified team of educators. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What ideas listed above will you take advantage of to make your school really good this year?</div>

Visions can become realities, but they can also become nightmares as well. Goals are reached by people who believe in the power of teamwork and are also missed by teams who get cause in traps of selfishness.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We know this to be true, so how can we prevent our organizations from moving backwards?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Dig deeper into the words used in your organization</b>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Actions often follow our words, which are shaped by our thoughts. Many times our thoughts are positively and negatively influenced by those around us as well as by the words our ears consume in the building and our eyes absorb through social media. If you think about it, those words enter our brains and the negative ones will impact our works if we fail to filter them appropriately. To determine if this is a problem in your school, a key indicator can possibly be revealed in how and when we use our pronouns and possessive pronouns in our daily work. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>Which Pronouns are Most Prevalent in your School?</b></span></div>
<div>
Often times, the pronoun problem is not pronounced among the school as a whole, but there are always pockets of blame pronouns as well as exemplars who always use power pronouns. The job of leaders, both campus and teacher leaders, is to confront and counteract blame pronouns with a reminder of why the team exists, and that problems and frustration can be overcome when the principle pronouns become we, us and our, instead of the divisiveness of mine and yours. Only then will the words positively impact the actions of the organization. </div>

Finding the latest information, checking your feed, checking your other feed, and then checking your stories can consume us if we're not careful. The dopamine hits increase with every like, love, comment or retweet, and they push us to be evermore connected to the people inside our screens.<br />
<br />
There is however an inherent problem that comes with this urge to connect, and that is it disconnects us from the people outside those screens that we stare at. Each time we connect to one thing, we disconnect from everything else. You have a choice. Connect with people inside your screen or outside your screen. The decision can be influenced by this question. Are you connecting with the most important things in this world most of the time?<br />
<br />

<br />
Chances are that if you are connected to your device a lot, you're doing that at the cost of connecting with people who matter most to you: your spouse, your children, your friends, and your colleagues. So what's most important in your life? If it's in your device, it might be time to reassess your priorities. <br />
<br />
Better yet, how much of life are you missing because you are so connected? After all, the purpose of life is to make a significant impact on those we are closest to first, and everyone else second. D<br />
<br />
This summer, disconnect so you can connect to what matters most.<br />

At the end of a lesson, an exit ticket is a quick check to see which students learned and which students are still struggling. Then the data from yielded from the exit ticket is leveraged to make adjustments to the next day’s lesson.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well, it makes good sense to employ exit tickets as much as possible to strengthen instruction, so wouldn’t it make even better sense if leaders used exit tickets to strengthen their leadership? After all leadership is nothing more than teaching folks how to get better at what they do. </div>
<div>
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Think about this.</span></b></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><b>We have meetings</b>. Are they getting it? </li>
<li><b>We have trainings</b>. Did they learn it?</li>
<li><b>We send communication</b>. Do they understand it?</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you answered these questions with “I don’t know”, then the answer for some folks in your organization will be a definite no. To strengthen your leadership, here are 6 strategies to use exit tickets to strengthen your leadership by knowing if your people are with you.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcjcBhcyL-dAe4L9qauo_I7OdnLqMeaG6ZldLKi7H1i1ZfCH0w0XVxLIBrSDjbebT-VDa0FNF5dEPp4K2UAhChDXNEB7wAa4ubrgJ1RgUU2jC2yJhI9UIaMI-hKdnaSsQg5isxho7uKcM/s1600/Screen+Shot+2019-06-28+at+8.23.39+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="388" data-original-width="1192" height="155" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcjcBhcyL-dAe4L9qauo_I7OdnLqMeaG6ZldLKi7H1i1ZfCH0w0XVxLIBrSDjbebT-VDa0FNF5dEPp4K2UAhChDXNEB7wAa4ubrgJ1RgUU2jC2yJhI9UIaMI-hKdnaSsQg5isxho7uKcM/s640/Screen+Shot+2019-06-28+at+8.23.39+AM.png" width="540" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><u>6 Exit Tickets for Leaders</u></b></span></div>
<div>
<ol>
<li><b><u>Sticky Note Feedback</u></b> - Provide sticky notes to your staff and at the end of the meeting or training, have them leave you with information that they don’t understand or need more clarification. </li>
<li><b><u>Hand signs</u></b> - Quickly poll the group with a thumbs up or down or fist of 5 (rating scale) to gauge their comfort with new information. </li>
<li><b><u>Google Form</u></b> - This tech tool allows you to get specific information from individuals through ratings or responses. </li>
<li><b><u>Mentimeter</u></b> - <a href="http://www.mentimeter.com/" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a> for a great tech tool that participants can anonymously leave ratings, feedback or questions. </li>
<li><b><u>Plickers</u></b> - <a href="http://www.plickers.com/" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a> for a tech-tool in the form of a paper-based QR code that participants can answer multiple choice or true/false questions while you can scan the entire room with your cell phone. </li>
<li><b><u>One & One</u></b> - Before people leave the meeting, give a note card to participants and ask them to write down one positive and one question or concern they have from your meeting or training. </li>
</ol>
</div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At the end of the day, your leadership is based entirely on how much your followers gain from your influence. You will never truly know your impact until you ask for help from those you serve. Exit tickets are a quick and powerful way to both gauge their knowledge and comfort as well as your effectiveness as a communicator and leader. </div>

It’s influence. It drives cultural and structural change. If you get down to the heart of leadership, it is the galvanizing force that permanently shapes an organization.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So what is the driving force of leadership? At the end of the day, it is how the leader serves. Now you may be thinking, “Not every leader serves”. Well actually every leader does serve. It’s just that some are self-serving, while others are not. Here’s what I mean. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><span>Weak leaders serve:</span></b></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Themselves first and others if it feels right. </li>
<li>The status quo. </li>
<li>At the cost of customers. </li>
<li>Safety and easiness,</li>
<li>Negativity </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9gLsI7lknwwibr2lQV8uHO_EohzbOjXNwS8APQ2pd1alygU19dliu37FJyeUCwyoThKFTOpIBFLSI8fWQe_ynRpO1jiMhXvHHm8jdc8gjHBi-9SPW5QUvpwj9ws0cGZVQ6Pv1L_1JHaI/s1600/FE1FD08D-A798-4648-A703-570FBBA61F93.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1173" data-original-width="1164" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9gLsI7lknwwibr2lQV8uHO_EohzbOjXNwS8APQ2pd1alygU19dliu37FJyeUCwyoThKFTOpIBFLSI8fWQe_ynRpO1jiMhXvHHm8jdc8gjHBi-9SPW5QUvpwj9ws0cGZVQ6Pv1L_1JHaI/s320/FE1FD08D-A798-4648-A703-570FBBA61F93.jpeg" width="317" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<b><span>Super leaders serve:</span></b><br />
<ul>
<li>Others first and themselves last. </li>
<li>A quest for continuous improvement all in an effort to avoid the comfort and stagnation of the status quo. </li>
<li>Customers as if it were an investment in the organization,</li>
<li>Innovators and a better way of doing things</li>
<li>High expectations and accountability,</li>
<li>Optimism to every one,</li>
<li>A higher calling. </li>
</ul>
<div>
Weak leaders serve at the cost of the organization’s future, but super leaders alter the current trajectory of that organization forever. The difference between those two leaders always comes down to one question. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Are you here to serve yourself or everyone else?</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
